Each of us has a rotation of three boxes (or more for large shares).
Three boxes gives us room to forget to return our box to the drop point one week and still have a box for the farmers to use for our share.
Forgetting two weeks in a row causes a great hassle for the farmers and this is compounded with multiple members forgetting the return their box two weeks in a row.  The farmers get up at the crack of dawn to pick produce, custom pack our boxes, and rush to get them delivered to the drop points and return before they hit bad traffic in SLC.  You can understand that having to search for a box for members and having to create new labels and such would add to the work load and busyness of the morning.

SO, remember to return you box each week to the drop point when you come to pick up your share.  You can drop off our box earlier in the week to your drop point too.

AND, if you don't remember to return your box two weeks in a row, we will ask you to pay $20 for our trouble.  This money will go into a 'end of the year member meeting' fund.

IF, members refuse to pay the 'hassle fee', we will be encouraged to not deliver your last share in consequence.  We do not desire to resort to this, but we are not asking too much for members to return their boxes...

Thanks for your consideration and cooperation!

Sorry to inform you that several items in the garden were impacted by the intense heat of the past week, resulting in sparse shares this week. We will make up for it later in the summer. Please be patient.

SMOOTHIE
What I did last night is put the rosemary, peppermint, and I think the flower looking thing in a food processor with pineapple.  I thought that it tasted good, but my Father and Son thought it was too strong.  LOL

ASIAN STIR FRY
asian stir-fry tonight (recipe from epicurious.com <http://epicurious.com>  - I searches for daikon). I will substitute the bok choy for the cabbage, add ground turkey (cause I've got it in the fridge) and saute the scallions at the last minute.

BOOK RECOMMENDS TO BORROW FROM THE LIBRARY OR PURCHASE
One of my favorites is Farmer John's Cookbook: The Real Dirt on Vegetables  by John Peterso, one of the early CSA farmers and a character. His film, The Real Dirt on Farmer John is interesting, funny and touching. It won the audience favorite award for documentary at the 2006 Slamdance Festival---kind of an alternative Sundance.

SHRIMP SALAD
We had poached quail eggs on spring greens and spinach with warm shrimp on night one. The dressing was made with Zoe's honey.

DEVILED QUAIL EGGS
Deviled Quail eggs are small but very good

A HEALTHY IMMUNE SYSTEM
You are helping people to have a healthy immune system, and there is no greater mission than to help others become more healthy.  I believe you are saving lives.  The website is http://www.hospitalinfection.org.  There are many videos and radio clips on this website, but I need to warn you, they made me cry.  It is scary, but it is important to have the knowledge, because it is now everywhere.  It is no longer just in hospitals and medical facilities.  You can get it at the grocery store or gym.  If we cure this, I will let you know all the steps we used.  Zoe's Garden is one of the steps

June 19, 2008

We had a rough start this week and we apologize. We had trouble finding the new Tuesday drops and ended up being late. It took THREE hours to get to Park City due to traffic and road construction, even though we planned for 1.5 hours of travel. Bear with us as we dial in our travel time. We expect the Tuesday drops to be completed by 3pm (Utah County 4pm, if traffic cooperates). We expect the Park City Drop to be delivered by 3pm (Heber 4pm).

The honey is included in the shares only once during the season.  The eggs will be included on and off through out the season.  We will try and not place any eggs in any the shares opting out of them.

If you are interested in visiting the farm, please wait until mid-July since we are very busy with planting.  Come mid-July, please call and schedule an appointment and David would be happy to give you a guided tour and spend some time with you.

Very soon we will include prices for our naturally raised animals on our website.  You can order a whole or half beef, pork, or lamb, in addition to purchasing duck, geese, chicken, and pre-ordering a heritage turkey for thanksgiving.  Watch the website for updates.

QUAIL EGGS
There are lots of fun things to do with quail eggs. you can hot boil, scramble, fry, pickle, eat raw on sushi or the best thing you can do with quail eggs is have you kids sit on it for 15 days and it may hatch 1/2 human 1/2 quail hahahahahahah - Jen Chen

RECIPES & QUESTIONS
I'm getting a lot of questions about identifying the produce and how to cook it. I'm getting the list of produce from David over the phone and I am not familiar with most of these items, so please excuse the many mistakes that WILL happen. Some members are kind enough to walk me through my misspelling and helping me identify produce items - thanks! I'm thinking of creating a 'blog' or 'forum' where members can easily offer questions and suggestions regarding the daily share - what is in it and how to cook it. What do you think? Tell me if you would use it before I go to the effort of creating it.

FYI - Share boxes are wax coated and are 12inches wide x 18inches long x 11inches high

TUESDAYS, June 17th
WEDNESDAYS, June 18th and
FRIDAYS, June 20th

PARK CITY PRODUCE STAND
We are still attempting to find a home for a daily produce stand in Park City, ideally along Hwy 224. If you have any connections, please let us know. Our first attempt ended in failure the owners were asking too much money to make it worth our while.

June 11, 2008

DROP DATES
We will begin delivery next week, June 16th.

The farmers are wanting input on an idea and will make a decision based on your response:  Would we be willing to move the Monday drops to Tuesday?  Would we be willing to move the Saturday drop to Friday?  (Wednesday would stay the same.)  Please respond and let us know what you think.  (Next week drops will remain the same.)

PARK CITY PRODUCE STAND
Our talks with the land owners on hwy 224 have ended unfortunately - they were asking too much for use of their space each month.  We are looking into alternatives, if you have ideas, please let us know.  We will let you know of any developments.

NEXT WEEK'S SHARE
Next week's share will likely include spinach, lettuce, radishes, mustard greens, challops, kale, turnip greens, arugara, maybe basil, maybe peas, maybe swiss char, and maybe garlic.
Larger shares will get a greater variety.
And next week's share will include a sample of honey.

MISSED WEEK'S
If you will be gone during the summer, let us know at least a week in advance so we will know not to pack your share that week.  We would prefer to double your share the next week to make up for it.  We can let a few members extend their shares beyond the season (if they pick up their share at the farm).

June 5th, 2008

Unfortunately the recent storms have dampened our crop growth and we must postpone our start date one week; our first deliveries will be on June 16th.

Our drop locations are still in flux.
We are adding a drop location in OGDEN at the Beehive Cheese Factory, 2440 E 6600 S, Ogden – if you desire to switch to this location, please email me quickly.  We will be selling Beehive cheese at our produce stands this year.  Beehive Cheese is behind Pitcher Sports, North of the intersection of hwy 89 and I-84; it is  near Spotlight Dance Studio, in Building/Unit B.
Our KAYSVILLE drop location has changed.  We moved to some new land this year in Layton and the Kaysville drop location is being moved to the farm itself, 1700 N Fort Ln, LAYTON.
Our SANDY drop point has been relocated to be more central to Sandy and easier to access from main roads to 796 Silver Sage Dr, Sandy.
We are still waiting on the go ahead for a Park City Produce Stand location, which will also serve as our drop point for PARK CITY.
The HEBER drop location will be at Balance Wellness Center, 245 W 100 S, Heber City.

Here is a link to a Google Map of our drop points.

Our Monday drops (Sugar House, Sandy, Utah County, Layton, Ogden) will be after the 3pm truck delivery.
Our Wednesday drops (Park City, Heber) will be after the 1pm truck delivery.
Our Saturday, Cup of Joe, drop will be after the 1pm truck delivery.

June 3rd, 2008

Share deliveries start next week, June 9th!

Depending on your delivery point, it will start on Monday, Wednesday, or Saturday.  Keep in mind that even though we started on June 9th, we will still get 20 weeks of share deliveries.

We are still finalizing some of our drop point details:
PARK CITY: is waiting on whether we will have a daily produce stand to pick up shares from and where it will be (for Wednesday deliveries).
HEBER: details are subject to the PARK CITY drop; Wednesdays, Balance - Therapeutic Massage and Wellness Center: 245 West 100 South, Heber City
SUGAR HOUSE: Mondays, 1764 East Bryan Ave (1560 South), 3:45-8pm
CUP OF JOE (SLC): Saturdays, from 8am - 1pm. This new location is only two blocks from Pioneer Park where the SL Farmers Market happens; 353 W 200 S

UTAH COUNTY: Mondays, 536 West 100 South, Lindon (by The Home Depot by the 1600 North exit off I-15), 4-8pm? (time to be confirmed

May 31st, 2008

We will begin delivery of shares on the week of Monday, June 9th!

Please be patient with us as we firm up the details on the Park City, Heber, and Sandy drop locations and times.

We are still negotiating for a spot for a Park City Produce Stand.  The results of our negotiations will determine the location and time of the Park City/Heber drops.

Today, May 31st, is our deadline for signing up for shares.  After today our prices will increase for late subscribers.  We are currently at about 110 members and have room to grow...

May 17, 2008

The weather has been dry so we are waiting until after Memorial Day to set our start date, so stayed tuned.

We are also still waiting to hear back from the land owners regarding a location for a Park City Produce Stand.

Currently we have more members interested in Sandy as a drop point rather than West Jordan so we may switch the West Jordan drop point to Sandy. We will keep you posted.

May 2, 2008

We are moving the Salt Lake Farmer's Market pickup location to CUP OF JOE, 353 W 200 S, Saturdays, from 8am - 1pm. This new location is only two blocks from Pioneer Park where the SL Farmers Market happens.

April/May 2008

PARK CITY PRODUCE STAND
We are still pursuing the idea of having a daily produce stand in Park City instead of having a booth at the farmer's market(s). If you are interested in helping with the produce stand, let us know. We currently have three people interested in helping.

FARM PROGRESS & PROJECTION
Beets, spinach, peas, and rhubarb are just a few things popping up out of the ground at the farm. We anticipate in June we will have at least 15-20 varieties of produce ready for you guys. When we get some pictures snapped we will pass those on to you.

DROP POINTS
PARK CITY AREA: we did Wednesdays last year, but what happens with the produce stand will determine our day, location, and time TBD (To Be Decided).
POSSIBLY HEBER & MIDWAY: this will be affected by the Park City drop, last year we had help delivering here on Wednesdays. Our projected pick up location, the same as last year, is 245 W 100 S in Heber. We have a couple families willing to help this drop point happen.
SUGAR HOUSE: Mondays, 1764 East Bryan Ave (1560 South), 3:45-8pm.
SALT LAKE FARMERS MARKET: Saturdays at the Pioneer Park Farmer's Market from 8am - 1pm.
SANDY: Sandy has the potential of becoming a drop point for us this year, so if you are interested in this location please be sure to type "Sandy" in the potential drop point text box in the 'Join Now!' membership form OR email us. This would be a Monday drop.
WEST/SOUTH JORDAN: Mondays, location and time TBD. The Price family has offered to be a back up drop point (they were the drop point last year), but we could use somebody else to help in this location.
KAYSVILLE: Mondays, at Bamboo Garden from 3-8pm.
POSSIBLY PROVO: Mondays, location and time TBD. We have several people interested in helping delivery to Utah County are are firming up the details.

HELPING WITH NEW DROP POINTS
We currently are  planning on having drop points in Kayesville, Sugar House, West Jordan, the  Salt Lake Farmers Market, and Park City.  We are looking at adding Provo  and Midway to that list.  If you are interested in starting a new drop  point, contact us.  We would like to have at least 20 members make up a  drop point, but are willing to cooperate with members to make new locations  possible.  We are also willing to negotiate a ‘deal’ to make your  assistance more attractive.

MEMBERSHIP
We are adding new  members almost daily.  We hope to build a base of over 100 members this  year, so spread the word!

February 2008

New CSA Membership Coordinators
Alissa Effland served during the 2007 inaugural season to orchestrate membership, communication, drop points, and the website.  Being pregnant with twins, she has asked us, Jon & Cheryl Henry, to assume these responsibilities.  We wish Alissa and the babies a healthy pregnancy and delivery.

Online Subscriptions
Effective February 23rd, we are accepting online subscriptions for the 2008 season, you can click on “Join Now!” to proceed.  After providing membership information, you will be redirected to a payment page.  Sign up before March 15 and receive a 5% early bird discount. Last year we limited our membership to 100.  This year we are expanding our limit to 200.  Tell your friends and help us grow our membership base.

Deadlines
March 15th - last day to take advantage of 5% early bird subscription reduction. May 30th - last day to subscribe as a member of the CSA for the 2008 season.

A small share includes 12-17 varieties of produce each week. Early bird price - $700 for new members, $685 for returning members.
A medium share includes 15-20 varieties of produce each week. Early bird price - $1092 for new members, $1077 for returning members.

Drop Points
2008 drop points include Kaysville, Sugar House, West Jordan, Park City, and the Salt Lake Farmers Market.  We hope to continue drop points in Provo and Midway, but are looking for volunteers to help distribute.  Additional drop points will be created with at least 20 members picking up from that location.  Let us know if you are interested in helping with a drop point this year.

Meat & Poultry
Zoe’s Garden is now raising heritage meat and poultry for purchase. These animals have a proven history of being unaltered in their breeding and often are of ancient lineage.  Watch the website for more information on this exciting product.

Returning Members Box Fee Refund
As promised, the 2007 box fee will be refunded subject to the condition of your boxes.  The refund will be applied to your 2008 box fee. After this year, all members will pay an annual box fee since the boxes rarely withstand more than one season.

Boxes
Speaking of boxes, each member purchases three boxes for rotation during the season.  It is very important that you return your box every week to be filled with subsequent distributions.  Each box has YOUR name, unique requests, and phone number written on it.  Please respect our time and help us serve your needs (as we carefully customize your share each week), by bringing back your box!

Vacations
When you need to miss a week due to vacation, you MUST give ONE WEEK advance notice and choose your option for collecting that portion: 1. Double your share the following week, or 2. Specify a different week DURING the 20 week summer season to collect your missed portion.  If you fail to give notice, your week’s share will be forfeited.

Season Extensions
The growing season is longer than twenty weeks.  Some of you may be interested in extending your share to continue enjoying the fall crop.  As we approach the end of the summer season, we will let you know about the costs and varieties of produce available.

Zoe’s Garden Vision
1. Promote sustainable, organic agriculture. We are crusaders for a healthy planet, practicing methods that take care of the earth.

2. Provide healthy eating by farming 'heritage' varieties of produce and animals. Consumerism has robbed foods of the quality and nutritional benefits they once provided. Only by returning to time-honored farming practices can the full benefit of our food be obtained. That means starting with thorough-bred seed and animals and doing things the long, hard way to get the best results. The higher cost is recovered in foods that possess their full nutrient values.

3. Expose people to a healthy variety of foods. It brings us great pleasure to turn people on to unique flavors. We commit to helping you learn how to cook and use  these new foods through recipe and information sharing.

4. Encourage healthy growing. We want to help you discover how to grow the same varieties of produce we provide. Contact us for information, seed, and plants for your garden.
